Year Round Sun in Lanzarote

The island of Lanzarote is the eastern most of the Canarian archipelago and sits only 70 kilometers off the coast of Morocco. As a result its climate resembles that of a desert region, with high temperatures during the day but cooler nights. And like the desert, the air is dry rather than humid, due primarily to the prevailing winds that blow in from the Atlantic.

A low amount of rainfall is also one of the main features of the climate, with what precipitation there is normally falling between December and March. All of these factors have created the perfect conditions for sun-starved holidaymakers looking to spend a few days basking on one of the island’s sandy beaches.

Something that many thousands of visitors have done over the last forty odd years. The island remains popular, even though newer destinations have emerged as competitors since then. Not all these places are able to provide the winning combination of sun and sea all year round though. Which is why foreign travelers still regularly visit the main resorts of Puerto del Carmen and Playa Blanca.

Each can boast a good range of rentals, with villas in Puerto del Carmen often being the preferred type of accommodation. Alternatively, there are several Lanzarote hotels that offer locations that are hard to beat in Puerto del Carmen. For instance, the Fariones hotel has tropical gardens reaching right down to the waters edge and a small sandy cove that is an ideal spot for swimming.

There are even one or two apartment complexes that open directly onto the sea, with the waves breaking just one or two meters from the terrace. Interspersed along the seafront are several kilometers of beautiful beaches, all packed with golden grains and gentle access to the sea. The rest of the resort is suitably low-key, with none of the concrete monstrosities to be found in other resorts.

Attractive restaurants and bars offer a wide choice of cuisine, with most able to provide a table al-fresco. Fish dishes form a large part of the menu, with most freshly caught the same day. All in all, the town of Puerto del Carmen is perfect for holidays in Lanzarote, especially for those who enjoy the warm weather. The sun is considerably hotter here than in mainland Europe, which sometimes catches people unawares, so a high factor sun tan lotion is usually recommended.
